The Church Insurance Group has agreed to pay $75,000 to settle a civil lawsuit brought against the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and Bishop Andrew Waldo of Upper South Carolina by the wife of the former dean of the Cathedral.
In a letter to members of the congregation dated 11 Dec 2012, senior warden Mark James said the cathedral’s insurance carrier had settled the lawsuit against the advice of the cathedral chapter and Bishop Waldo, who have maintained Ellen Linder’s lawsuit had no merit.
On 29 Sept 2011, Ellen Linder, wife of Dean Philip C. Linder, filed suit alleging she and her husband had been defamed and abused by Bishop Waldo and the cathedral following his 14 July 2010 suspension.

The Rt. Rev. Andrew Waldo
The Bishop of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina has offered his support to national church loyalists in the Diocese of South Carolina in their battle with Bishop Mark Lawrence.
In his 2 Dec 2012 Advent letter to the church, Bishop Andrew Waldo did not offer ecclesiastical oversight to the 5 to 12 South Carolina congregations that did not back the 17 Nov 2012 vote for secession, his offer of pastoral support lays the ground work for their absorption in to his diocese.
Bishop Waldo wrote this “Advent find South Carolina Episcopalians with an open wound, our armor pierced by our inability across diocesan boundaries to navigate the challenges of living and staying together in disagreement.”
