Katharine Jefferts Schori

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has called a special convention of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina for 26 January 2013 to elect a provisional bishop.

On 8 Dec 2012 the “steering committee” of South Carolina, a group of lay and clergy members of the diocese loyal to the national church announced that Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori would “convene” the gathering at Grace Church in Charleston.

The Presiding Bishop is perfectly free to meet with the handful of dissenters to form a new diocese, with no complaint from those of us who have remained loyal to Jesus Christ under the leadership of the Rt Rev Mark Lawrence. Bishop Lawrence has never argued against this. In fact, he’s been quite clear that those who wish to realign with TEC are free to leave with their church property and re-form however they see fit–with his blessing and well wishes. What the PB and dissenters are NOT free to do is arrogate the identity of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina (including its name, its diocesan seal, etc), nor the identities of the parishes that have chosen to remain within the diocese, as they have attempted to do to date.
