No signs of crisis as Lambeth Conference begins: CEN 7.19.08 July 19, 2008

Peace has broken out across Canterbury, according to official reports released by the Lambeth Conference, with prayer and pan-Anglican bonhomie the order of the day. However, bishops attending the conference tell ReligiousIntelligence.com the Conference and the Anglican Communion are in a fragile state, held together from collapse by the labours of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams.

Dr Williams has received near universal plaudits from the bishops attending the Conference, which has so far been centered round all-day retreats at Canterbury Cathedral. However, bishops tell Religious Intelligence that once the retreats end on Saturday, the underlying tensions that have brought the Communion close to a crack up will likely erupt.
