The Archbishop of Canterbury’s comments on Sharia law were naïve and uninformed, the Vatican said on March 11, and would not further meaningful Christian-Muslim relations.
Speaking to reporters in Rome following the close of a Catholic-Muslim summit, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran the President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue said Dr. Williams’ suggestion that Sharia law was unavoidable in Britain “was a mistake. A mistake because, above all, one has to ask what type of Sharia. And then, it was a bit naive.”
Cardinal Tauran, who heads the Catholic Church’s dialogue with Islam, said that while Dr. Williams’ intentions were good, he failed to take into consideration the “reality of Sharia.”
“It is not just a question of good will. There are juridical aspects that are not reconcilable” between Sharia law and the Western concept of human rights and equality under law, he said, according to Reuters.
The cardinal’s comments to reporters came at the start of two days of talks with Muslim leaders in preparation for a November summit with Pope Benedict XVI. Among those attending the Vatican conference were representatives of the 138 Muslim scholars and intellectuals who wrote to the Pope and Dr. Williams and other Christian leaders last year urging Christians and Muslims to find common ground between the faiths.
