Strengthening the family in the face of social change will reverse the social decay facing much of the Caribbean, the West Indies said at its General Synod last week. The rise in crime, broken families and a wounded and perverse view of sexuality were moral problems that needed to be addressed by a reaffirmation of right doctrine and Biblical truths, delegates to the Nov 24-29 meeting at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Antigua (pictured) said.
The sixty delegates from the eight Caribbean dioceses stretching from Belize to Guyana affirmed the church’s traditional teachings on marriage and human sexuality, backing the 1998 Lambeth Resolution on human sexuality, and pledged to continue working towards the creation of an Anglican Communion Covenant.

As a person not born in the WI, but here for 30+ years, I submit that an overhaul of the outdated and damaging sexual focus in the WI be examined by the church and it’s local leadership. It seems to be that the sexual style prevelant during slavery, when the slaves were not allowed to have cohesive family units, has become a way of life that is weakening the gene pool in this part of the world and is creating a generation of angry young men who haven’t had the luxury of a father who shows them HOW to be men and idealistic young women who expect to be beaten in order to feel loved. The ability to be discriminating in your choice of sexual partners seems to be severely lacking. The availability of partners who are NOT related to you is shrinking and the resulting offspring are being affected negatively, both physically and mentally. This is not an opinion, it is happening. Not only is the WI style of having children with many different men and/or women damaging genetically, it is in total opposition to the laws of God and any church, not just Angelican. And, I feel it’s child abuse in it’s most basic sense. The church, all churches, need to re-emphasize the importance of monogomy and faithfulness. In addition, the sanctity of marriage needs to be re-energized. Thus far, it is much nicer in the WI to be a Boyfriend or a Girlfriend, than to be a spouse. Time to mature and clean up the sexual free for all that occurs in the WI, including some in the church hierarchy.
