The Windsor Coalition of American bishops have asked the Archbishop of Canterbury not to mince words when he meets with the US House of Bishops next month and to give a forthright idea of the consequences facing the Episcopal Church if it fails to respond to the Primates’ February Dar es Salaam communiqué.
Meeting outside Houston from Aug 9-10, the Deputy General Secretary of the Anglican Consultative Council Canon Gregory Cameron met with 18 US bishops to brief them on the primates’ expectations, as well as to discuss the forthcoming September meeting between Dr. Williams and the US bishops.
Dr. Williams will arrive in New Orleans on Sept 19 and meet in private session over the next two days with the US bishops and members of the Joint ACC-Primates Standing Committee. The Primates have given the US Bishops a deadline of Sept 30 to respond to their request for an unambiguous statement of where the US Church stands on the issue of gay bishops and blessings.
Participants at the Texas meeting, the fifth gathering of the Windsor Bishops-so called due to their pledge of fealty to the Windsor Report process-did not issue a statement at the close of the meeting. But two bishops contacted by The Church of England Newspaper reported that they were pleased and encouraged by the gathering.
